Environmental indicators for EU fisheries
The 'Developing indicators of environmental performance of the common fisheries policy' (Indeco) project was established to determine the impact of fishing on ecosystems. The initiative also developed indicators for socioeconomic factors and for determining the effectiveness of different management measures. In addition, researchers assessed the applicability of the different indicators and developed models for determining the relationship between environmental conditions and fishing activities. Indicators are valuable tools for tracking change, identifying problems and monitoring the effectiveness of EU policies. Researchers identified a set of indicators for measuring the effectiveness of fisheries management, particularly with regard to environmental aspects. The Indeco initiative helped to achieve a more coherent approach in the use of indicators in the implementation of the Common Fishery Policy (CFP) across the EU. Operational models highlighting the relationship between fishing activities and changes to the marine environment were used to support the environmental indicators developed. Researchers also identified and addressed gaps in the data and sought to ensure that agreed indicators were used for formulating policy. The Indeco project played a valuable role in the sustainable management of EU fisheries by bringing together the different countries involved and combining the scientific and policy expertise of the different participants.
