E-learning potential broadens through lessons learned
Science and technology (S&T) communication activities can fall short of citizen expectations and needs. Networks of Excellence (NoE) on e-learning extend beyond the realm of one-way communication offering a way for large-scale research projects in science communication to reach various target groups. The EU-funded project 'Participatory communication activities on e-learning' (Parcel) tested new means for extending to a broader range of users. The scope was that Parcel would act as a pilot project complimenting Kaleidoscope and Prolearn, two NoEs on technology-enhanced learning funded by the European Commission. Lessons were drafted to improve future local and regional undertakings for large-scale projects. Additional progress on technology-enhanced learning was encouraged through the input of target groups. Parcel aimed specifically at small to medium Austrian and Czech non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that consist of technology-enhanced learning providers and users who cover a broad demographic range. For example, the software has been tried by youth and seniors alike, persons who are mentally and physically challenged and people from a range of educational backgrounds and economic status. Successes in this area can go a long way to helping reduce the gap in the digital divide of technology-enhanced learning.
