Objective
The RADENV project will provide training for 3 EST researchers in the CERN RP Group and provide them with innovative research opportunities. The next generation of accelerators with their increased energies and intensities will pose new challenges in terms of radiation protection. The radiation environment is highly complex and can only be understood with a combination of model calculations and benchmark experiments. The consequences of such new accelerators in terms of risk exposure to workers and to the g eneral public, as well as their environmental impact (control of activated gas and fluids and their release into the environment, proper management of radioactive waste) have to be assessed in the planning stage. ESTs will be closely supervised by internat ional experts, using state-of-the-art computing tools and equipment. Emphasis will be placed on laboratory-based training. They will follow training courses in their specialized and related fields, as well as a wide variety of courses, colloquia and semina rs. Work and training objectives will be clearly defined at the outset and regularly reviewed. The ESTs will be integrated in an international environment and will acquire transferable skills highly valued outside academia. They will work in close collabor ation with other CERN Departments, universities and research centres. The training projects will be of 3 years duration and can lead to a PhD. Supervision of ESTs working towards a PhD will follow a model similar to CERN's successful Doctoral Student progr am, in which projects are defined and monitored by a CERN supervisor in collaboration with a university professor. The opportunities provided by the EST scheme will allow more young researchers to be hosted and will extend CERN's training programmes to non -member state and non-EU nationals. Special efforts will be made to ensure appropriate framework conditions and equal opportunity policies, within CERN's well-established administrative infrastructures.
