Objective
We propose cavity QED experiments with solid state devices. This combines the applicant's background (PhD in vacuum cavity QED) and the host institute (specialized in quantum properties of nanoscale solid state devices). The combination of expertise will i ntroduce quantum optics concepts in the field of solid state qubit devices. We are particularly interested in micro-fabricating transmission lines that act as electromagnetic cavities for quantum dot devices. Such an on-chip cavity provides experimental co ntrol over the environment of the quantum dot and thereby over its coherence properties. This type of circuit has recently been dubbed circuit QED. The long life time of electron spin states make spins attractive to define qubit states. We will couple spin s in quantum dots to electrical signals using spin-to-charge conversion schemes. This will allow us to control single spin states using the modes of an on-chip cavity. We will optimize the circuit in order to maximize the spin coherence time. Additionally, we will design multiple spin qubits placed apart but coupled via the on-chip cavity, operated in the strong coupling regime. This allows the controlled creation of entanglement between distant solid state qubits, as well as the implementation of simple qu antum algorithms.
