Three industrial chemical research projects in: biocatalysis, reaction state modelling and electronic noses process control

Objective

This is a merged contract from 3 proposals: 510117 (ABENCA), 510110 (REACTION KINETICS) and 510109 (E-NOSES PRO CONTROL) under the joint proposal 510117 (ABENCA). The three subprojects (A, B and C) are run by two departments under the supervision of one Project Co-ordinator. A. (ABENCA): Biocatalysts composed of enzymes are of great interest to the chemical industry. The objective is to acquire a range of useful biocatalysts and develop innovative and compatible processes. The fellowship will attract an experienced biochemist and a process engineer with profound knowledge of state-of-the-art biotechnological process development to 1) transfer knowledge, 2) identify relevant cases/carry out studies, 3) demonstrate the potential, 4) increase the knowledge base and networking by international co-operation. B. (REACTION KINETICS): Understanding reaction pathway and kinetics of a (side) reaction provides better safety and control, optimising operating conditions to obtain higher selectivity and conversion. In order to determine the kinetics and thermodynamics of a reaction, the reaction mechanism must be known. The fellowship is meant to attract a theoretical chemist with profound knowledge of state-of-the-art molecular modelling to 1) transfer knowledge of quantum chemistry, 2) identify relevant cases, 3) carry out industrial case studies, 4) demonstrate the potential for industrial practise. C. (E-NOSES PRO CONTROL): Electronic Noses have been developed since the early 90's. Rarely used in the chemical ind ustry, the fellowship is meant to select and investigate applications for e-noses, suitable for process control and process monitoring. Based on the relative low cost of e-noses, one can expect better process control resulting in higher productivity, sel ectivity and margins. The fellow will help development of successful working examples for chemical processes, enhancing profitability, safety and lower environmental impact of chemical processing.
