Integrated risk reduction of information-based Infrastructure Systems (IRRIIS)

Objective

The Integrated Project "Integrated Risk Reduction of Information-based Infrastructure Systems" (IRRIIS) shall be carried out under the motto: Enhance substantially the dependability of LCCI's by introducing appropriate Middleware Improved Technology (MIT) components within the next 3 years.

IRRIIS will increase dependability, survivability and resilience of EU ICT-based critical infrastructures and has the objectives:
- to determine a sound set of public and private sector requirements based upon scenario and related data analysis
- to design, develop, integrate and test MIT components suitable for preventing and limiting cascading
- effects and supporting automated recovery and service continuity in critical situations
- to develop, integrate, and validate novel and advanced modelling and simulation tools integrated into a synthetic environment for experiments
- to validate the functions of the MIT-components using the synthetic environment and the results of the scenario and data analysis
- to disseminate novel and innovative concepts, results, and products to other ICT-based critical sectors.

The electrical power infrastructure and its supporting telecommunication infrastructure are chosen as first priority example test case. The IRRIIS approach is based on the analysis of vulnerabilities of Large Complex Critical Infrastructures (LCCI), LCCI stakeholder knowledge, their requirements and existing state of the art technologies. Present weakness and vulnerabilities can be reduced by applying advanced ICT solutions between the basic software and the application layer of the ICT systems controlling complex infrastructures.

Novel ideas will be tested and validated by applying synthetic simulation environment experiments. The results of the analysis, the experiments, and the selected MIT components will be presented and disseminated to a broad spectrum of users and stakeholders. The Project will be executed by a well balanced consortium of 15 partners.
