Enhanced Learning Unlimited

Objective

The objective of Enhanced Learning Unlimited (ELU) is to look on how interactive digital TV can be used to increase learning opportunities in the home, office and school. The television is a familiar and reliable consumer device with around 95-99% penetration in European households. Personalised TV offers the biggest potential for increasing learning opportunities in the home. Through broadband TV content can be accessed on-demand. ELU partners believe that though the enlarge European counties lacks at this stage the infrastructure for Digital TV there is a much better chance for them to adapt this technology rather then the spreading out of PCs.

The lack of ICT competence is one of the main reasons why iDTV will come into most of the home much faster then any other computing device. The low price tag for the iDTV Set-Top Box will make those devices used far ahead of time from PCs. ELU technology and pedagogy research will focus on the personalisation systems and tools; developing the tools to more easily meta tag content based upon emerging learning object standards and the development of tracking systems all to cater for the diversity of personal learning styles and enable learning content to be easy retrievable through Personal TV systems.

ELU will look on the differences between the close screen watching on the personal PC and the convenience distance sitting in the leaving room in front of the TV and will suggest pedagogical methods about similarities and differences. It will also investigate the different between using a keyboard and mouse and the use of an advanced remote control. ELU project includes the development of methodology, the design and implementation of the technology required to enhance the MHP into an eLearning platform and will develop specific content to demonstrate those huge changes in moving from PC based eLearning into iDTV.
