GlutathloNe and gene regulation

Objective

Legumes are one of the most important crops, providing the major source of proteins and oil and improving the nitrogen soil fertilization. Glutathione (GSH) and its legume specific homologue, homoglutathione (hGSH), are major antioxidant molecules, which have important roles in plant defence against biotic and abiotic stresses, storage of reduced sulphur and redox control of the cell. Recently, our team has shown that these molecules have a key role in the nodulation process of legumes. GINGER will use a multi-disciplinary approach involving physiology, cellular biology, molecular biology, biochemistry and bioinformatics to isolate and characterize the molecular targets of GSH/hGSH during the nodulation process and to define the physiological role of GSH/hGSH during symbiosis.

The characterization of genes regulated by GSH/hGSH will be gainful not only for the legume/Rhizobium scientific research community but also for the plant-microbe interaction and plant development research fields such as cell differentiation, meristem development and redox state control of the cell metabolism. The main objective of GINGER is to provide an advanced training for a young researcher in the field of the redox cellular regulation in the framework of the nodule development. GINGE R will be performed in different high quality European laboratories to produce a researcher with broad technical skills as well as the networking between different European teams. The topic of GINGER is relevant to the FP6 scientific thematic priorities "Life Sciences, Genomics and Biotechnology for Health", "Food Quality and Safety" and "Sustainable Development, Global Change and Ecosystems".
