Forging a link between millennial cycles and enso-like oscillations

Objective

The earth climate experiences large amplitude, abrupt shifts on millennial scales that do not obviously respond to orbital forcing. The cause and consequence of these climate oscillations remains largely unknown albeit palaeoclimate reconstructions from high-resolution archives are increasingly establishing connections between millennial scale variability and El Niño-like phenomena The proposed study critically evaluate the causes of millennial-scale cycles by testing the role of the Eastern Tropical North Pacific (ETNP) ocean as a potential governor of global and sustained climate changes through ENSO-like perturbations.

The primary objective of the project is to reconstruct well-dated records of millennial scale oscillation from the ETNP using marine sediment cores with very high sedimentation rates, resolving centennial-millennial scale variability. We propose to reconstruct ENSO-like behaviour by capturing several diagnostic processes: upwelling/productivity, (2) denitrification, and (3) relative nutrient changes; all of which are documented to change dramatically responding to changes in thermocline depth, the mean position of the ITCZ and East-West movement of tropical convection cell associated with ENSO in the ETNP.

The selected proxies are specifically for processes that have global impacts because they can trigger positive feed back responses by regulating changes in greenhouse gas concentrations-namely CO2, CH4 and N2O. Such amplification is required to explain how local oscillation like ENSO can produce sustained episodes of global warming and cooling (Super-ENSO cycles) associated with millennial cycles.
