Design of Nanocomposites with Controlled Interfacial Morphology

Objective

Incorporation of nano-, as opposed to micron-sized building blocks in metal-polymer composites may in some cases improve materials properties and in other cases diminish them. Thus, in order to control the design of nanocomposites that exhibit superior materials properties, it is essential to develop a basic and comprehensive understanding of the physical and chemical phenomena associated with their formation.

The objective of this proposal is the development of a synergistic experimental and modelling approach in order to study the structure of the interfacial region between filler and matrix, which is the crucial factor influencing the macroscopic material behaviour. Reducing the filler size in metal-polymer nanocomposites, while preserving its volume fraction, leads to a dramatic increase of its surface area and interfacial contact with the polymer matrix. Strong interactions will result in a compact interface, while weak interaction will result in a diffuse interface. In addition, the strength of the interaction of a polymer molecule with the filler controls the molecular configurations and interactions (e.g. entanglement distribution) in a larger region surrounding the filler. The significance of the research will be the development of quantitative correlations between the structure of the interfacial region and the macroscopic mechanical properties of the nanocomposites.
