Creation and use of trust in virtual communities through reputation Management

Objective

The increasing size and complexity of computer systems today makes distributed and self-organizing systems an attractive proposition. This project examines how reputation management schemes can be used to monitor and manage these systems in a decentralized fashion.

Reputation management is not a replacement of traditional security solutions and is instead a complementary strategy that works through establishing trust between members of a virtual community allowing them to collaborate so that they can provide each other with robust services and services that would otherwise not have been possible.

We will look at the processes involved in the creation of trust, learning from past research in this area from several disciplines such as evolutionary biology, game theory, mechanism design, and social-network theory as well as various sub-disciplines of computer science such as E-commerce and peer-to-peer systems. We will also look at how online creation of trust differs from offline trust and the ways in which this t rust, once created, can be used and shared.

Reputation management will be applied to a number of collaborative and community-driven applications such as collaborative content distribution and spam detection. In order to undertake these activities, the fellow, Anurag Garg, will spend the two years of the fellowship at the Distributed Systems Group at Trinity College, Dublin.

The fellowship meets the programme objectives by attracting a world-class third country researcher to Europe. With research experience in three countries (India, US and Italy), he is ideally placed to foster new and strengthen old research collaborations through this fellowship.

This fellowship will fit the researcher's training needs as the host institution provides the necessary environment to conduct advanced research and has the resources to provide training in the desired complementary skills.
