The quantum theory and cosmological signature of loop quantum cosmology

Objective

Cosmology is currently in an era of detailed experimental measurement, which has pushed the boundaries of theoretical explanation leaving many unanswered questions. This project aims to further our theoretical understanding of the early universe through the theory known as loop quantum cosmology. A detailed understanding of the early universe, where energy densities are extremely large, requires a quantum theory of gravity and thus loop quantum cosmology, being derived from a candidate theory of quantum gravity known as loop quantum gravity, opens the possibility for a successful theoretical description.

This project aims to develop and use the theory to help answer certain fundamental questions in cosmology, in particular what is the behaviour of the universe as it nears the singularity and how did suitable initial conditions for inflation arise. Furthermore, the project will explore the theory both at a fundamental level as well as at the level of cosmological signatures.
