Objective
On the basis of the present cosmological data we can speak of so-called 'concordance model' of the Universe. According to this model, 95% of the energy density of the Universe is invisible and the normal matter only constitutes the remaining 5%. This invisible component can be either in the form of dark matter or dark energy, the latter being responsible for the observed acceleration of the cosmological expansion rate. The goal of this proposal is to examine the robustness of this concordance model when more degrees of freedom are allowed in the cosmological models.
In particular, it will consider a broader family of possible initial conditions and cosmological parameters, such as non-adiabatic modes and their power spectra that might result in particle physics motivated models. This type of analysis will be essential for understanding the consequences of the improved cosmological data arriving within the next few years. Especially the Planck satellite by ESA, which is to be launched in 2007, will provide us a wealth of new and improved data. The proposal will address some of the shortcomings of the concordance model, and will seek to explain them using particle physics models of the early universe.
