South American Permo-Triassic Fish Fauna Turnover and its Bearing on the Mass Extinction Scenario

Objective

Global extinctions, their causes, duration and recovery phases are still disputed on the basis of localized palaeontological and geochemical evidence. The greatest mass extinction allegedly affected 70-90 per cent of animal and plant species worldwide at t he P-T boundary (PTB), approximately 250 million years before present, but has been poorly studied in South America.

This multidisciplinary project seeks to investigate key strata from that continent in order to gather palaeontological and geochemical data on fishes, subsidiary taxa and stable isotopes, focusing on the presumed turnover of fish faunas and drastic environmental changes near this boundary in that region.

In particular, the evidence and implications of distinctive palaeoenvironments in association with bone-beds such as large, shallow epicontinental Gondwanan seas and the sediments in the vicinity of the PTB Araguainha impact crater in Brazil will be investigated in detail. Published records on fauna and environment from the Northern and Southern Hemisphere will be re-assessed, compared with the newly available South American data and evaluated with respect to the purported global extinction event.

The project will be based at the Natural History Museum (London), which houses most of the sample s and expertise. Together with the partners in this project, all analytical facilities necessary for its successful completion, will be in place. The Applicant will develop collection management skills by databasing newly collected materials. He will investigate PTB fish faunas and perform faunal studies using detrended correspondence and cluster analyses.

In order to diversify his career in research, he will be introduced to methodology and techniques in Scanning Electron Microscopy, stable isotope geochemistry and bio-/chemo-stratigraphy, he will interpret palaeoenvironments vis-a-vis the results and attempt to discover whether the data supports a fish fauna turnover in the targeted region.
