Objective
Background: The current estimate for the number of people with dementia in Europe is 5 million, and for the world, 24.3 million, with an estimated 4.6 million new cases every year. 30% to 50% of the people suffering from Alzheimer's Disease have psychotic symptoms. Psychotic symptoms in dementia include delusions and hallucinations.
These symptoms are seen as rooted in the biological changes that cause dementia and are usually treated with anti-psychotic medication. An alternative approach to the bio-medical approach is the social-environmental approach (Cohen-Mansfield, 2003), which analyzes psychotic symptoms in dementia relative to the interaction between the person's cognitive limitations and the physical and social environment.
Despite the anecdotal support for this theory, no studies have been done which have investigated psychotic symptoms from an environmental/psychosocial perspective and the applicability of this model is still unknown.
Specific Aims:
- Identification of psycosocial and environmental factors that seem to trigger or contribute to the manifestations of psychotic symptoms in dementia, and estimation of their relative prevalence.
- Development of a set of non-pharmacological interventions based on the factors identified in aim #1.
- A pilot-test of the feasibility and the efficacy of non-pharmacological interventions for psychotic symptoms in dementia.
Importance: This study will provide a greater understanding of psychotic symptoms in persons with dementia and lay the groundwork for an intervention study in which non-pharmacological interventions will be used instead of psychoactive medications.
By enhancing the understanding of these symptoms and potentially decreasing the negative side-effects associated with psychotropic medication, t his study has the potential of providing information that is crucial for improving the policy of care and enhancing the quality of life of persons with dementia and their caretakers.
