Distributed knowledge systems and techniques for advanced network management

Objective

Ericsson RTD Ireland in Athlone, has a small-scale research capability focused on network management. We propose a new vision for network management that is holistic, interdisciplinary and designed to tame network complexity through the use of highly hyper-distributed systems operating on dynamic semantic models of the network environment. Distributed computing (P2P, Grid) and knowledge engineering (data mining, machine learning, ontologies) will be critical for the development of next generation telecom network management systems.

By hosting 6 experienced researchers and 4 senior researchers over a 4-year period, we can:
- bring world-class researchers to Athlone to train and enhance the existing research team.
- create a multicultural, interdisciplinary environment where local and overseas visiting researchers, Ericsson researchers and design engineers can collaborate, cross-train and innovate.
- augment our collaborations with local universities and colleges.
- increase the competitiveness of the European telecoms industry.

The hosted researchers will form small teams with existing Ericsson researchers, sponsored Intern students and product design engineers. This will allow us to advance the state of the art, further the careers of all the researchers involved and create innovative new products for Ericsson's portfolio. By attracting to Ireland a large number of world-class researchers and combining them with a leading product development unit, we will create a forum for researcher mobility, the formation of life-long research partnerships and co-ordination of Europe-wide network management research.

This project addresses a number of objectives scheme, namely the advancement of the European Research Area, increased researcher mobility, increased scale and capacity of research in a host organisation, opportunities to expand the profile of researchers and attempts improve the overall training of researchers.
