Supramolecular chemistry and gene therapeutic potential of amine-substituted cyclodextrin end-functionalized triazine dendrimers based on melamine

Objective

Supramolecular dendrimer chemistry is a subject of immense academic and industrial interest. Having unique architectures and unusual properties, dendrimers, which are systems with features that include self-assembly and host-guest properties, have been shown to self-assemble with plasmid DNA, and the formation of this complex appears to facilitate non-viral gene delivery.

The two research groups of the host organisation involved in the proposed project, one with expertise in organic/organometallic chemistry and homogeneous catalysis and one with expertise in molecular biology, will carry out multidisciplinary research to develop competence in the fields of supramolecular chemistry (self-assembly, host-guest complex, molecular recognition, transition-metal catalysis) and gene transfer using novel dendritic systems. The efforts will be strongly reinforced by the transfer of knowledge by two incoming experienced researchers as well as the multidisciplinary exchange of expertise between the two partner labs.

We anticipate that this ToK project will not only contribute technical expertise to our groups, but will increase the potential and competitiveness of the Host, situated in a less-favoured region of EU, to perform basic research that can be directed to address public needs, taking into account social and environmental issues.
