Cerebral mechanisms underlying the processing of Cued speech information in deaf people: Brain imaging and computational approaches

Objective

This project aims at studying the specific cognitive operations accounting for the processing of Cued Speech (CS) information, a fairly 'new' mode of communication among deaf people, using various experimental approaches. The main goals are:
- to study dynamically the neural processes involved in CS, and
- to describe the cerebral network underlying the processing of CS information.

Therefore, this project implies the development of competences in complementary areas such as brain imaging, including electrophysiological (ERP) and magnetic resonance (MRI) techniques. The knowledge transfer objectives of the project are first, obtaining preparation in the theoretical background of CS and audiovisual speech processing in general, and second, training in new techniques so far little developed in our team, such as ERP and fMRI. The first objective will be achieved by means of international collaborations our team is already participating in.

Our second objective would be achieved through the recruitment of two research fellows, one a specialist in electrophysiology and the other in functional magnetic resonance, so that the members of our lab could acquire this knowledge as the team will soon be equipped with the newest EEG equipment developed in the market, and a 3 tesla magnet system shared with the University Hospital Centre. Moreover, this transfer of knowledge will be completed by the training of our own staff in partner labs, notably for fMRI analysis.

Thus, this project will provide transfer of knowledge to an institution (the University of La Laguna) that intends to develop a new area of research (Advanced Cognitive Neuroscience) and is located in a less favoured region (Canary Islands, Spain).
