Discovery platform for novel catalysts

Objective

This project focuses on the transfer and integration of distinct but highly complementary areas of research competence in a SME and an academic Institute. The Academic host's expertise lies in the area of the development of biotechnological routes to chiral molecules. The Industry host's expertise lies in the area of the development homogeneous catalytic routes to chiral molecules via High Throughput Experimentation (HTE).

The aim is to build a long-term strategic partnership, in which for the SME its core discovery platform can be enhanced greatly to increase its competitiveness, whereas the academic scientists will learn how to work in a commercial environment and acquire knowledge about the market. In this project 3 scientists, to be recruited from across Europe at the University or at the SME, will be seconded to the other partner and work under the supervision of experienced scientists for a period of up to 24 months, before they'll return for (at least) one year to further transfer and develop the knowledge acquired there.

This scheme will allow Transfer of Knowledge in three directions
:-from Academia to SME
-from SME to Academia
-from the various countries where the recruited scientists came from to the project partners.
For scientists, especially if they'd originally came from the New Member States, this may make a big difference as they acquire broad knowledge beyond purely scientific expertise.

The SME will benefit from an enhanced technology platform, thereby increasing its competitiveness and the academic centre will obtain a strategic industry relationship and direct experience with commercialization. The project addresses various major strategic objectives of the European Commission - most notably the empowerment of world-class research and development in SMEs, and the enhancement of awareness of exploitation potential among scientists and ability to link science with innovation.
