Integration of fluidic and electric microscaled principles

Objective

The Institute for Bioprocessing and Analytical Measurement Techniques (iba) has developed of a new Segmented-Flow High-Throughput-System for nanoliter-scaled bioractors (NSB). The technical system as well as its trademark 'Pipe Based Bioreactors' (PBB) are protected by patents. PBB bases on the injection of polar aqueous droplets (nanoliter-scaled bioractors) into a non-polar carrier liquid and distinguishes basically from standard methods like Parallel-Working High-Throughput-Systems.

Caused by advantages like sterility and technical simplicity the PBB-system possesses potential particularly for applications in individual medicine as diagnostic tool (and thus for combat diseases that are not under control at present), but also in biotechnology, pharmacology, for defence purposes and for alternative methods to animal (tissue) testing. Additionally, the further development, production and commercial exploitation of PBB offers a chance for European enterprises to increase global market share.

However, besides the advantages of PBB there remain tasks to be solved. The tasks with first priority are the customer-controlled handling of the NSB within the fluidic system on the one hand and the determination of the NSB properties on the other hand. We intend to solve these tasks applying biophysical principles to handle the NSB (electric fields, electrokinetics) as well as to measure their properties (electro impedance spectroscopy).

These are highly multidisciplinary tasks, for which the specialised expertise of the Marie Curie Host Fellowship for the Transfer of Knowledge is urgently needed. Only by MC Transfer of Knowledge it will be possible to establish a new iba-competence regarding electrokinetics and electro impedance spectroscopy ant their numerical simulations, respectively. Merging the knowledge of MC fellows and iba's competence in microfluidics will initialise a breakthrough for PBB as a novel HTS-tool for individual medicine in Europe and worldwide.
