Modelling, characterization and development of MgB2 superconductors for AC power applications

Objective

One of the high-temperature super-conductor (HTS) with greatest potential for large-scale industrial applications is the recently discovered (in 2001) Magnesium Diboride (MgB2). The introduction of novel MgB2-based electrical devices in the existing and future European power networks will increase their efficiency, power quality and the optimisation of available resources. At this stage, however, further RTD efforts on MgB2 conductor development are required, especially towards power applications, for which the AC losses are of primary concern. The main goal of this project is the development of novel low-loss MgB2 wires and tapes with improved properties for AC power applications. For this purpose advanced 2D and 3D numerical methods will be used for conductor modelling in different operating conditions.

The AC loss mechanisms will be investigated and possible ways for loss minimization will be studied by finite-element method simulations. The optimal geometries and conductor configurations (in terms of lowest AC losses) will be used for the design of novel conductors with improved AC loss performance, produced in long lengths. In addition, experimental characterization of the conductors will be performed, consisting of measurements of the critical current in magnetic field, as well as of the transport current and magnetization AC losses. This is a multidisciplinary project, involving crucial aspects of materials science, experimental physics, and electrical engineering. The transfer of knowledge and skills in numerical modelling, and the acquired advanced experimental know-how, will allow the host organization to consolidate its international collaboration and reinforce its position as a leading European manufacturer of long-length MgB2 conductors for large scale applications, such as super-conducting fault-current limiters, transformers, and cables, which are expected to reach around 2010-2012 an important market share in the electric power industry.
