Micrometeorological techniques for in situ measurements of greenhouse gases exchange

Objective

In Wielkopolska Region, the Agrometeorology Department of Agricultural University in Poznan (ADAUP) plays a major role in the research of mass and energy exchange between the surface and the atmosphere. Since the year 2003, a permanent measuring station, for estimation of mass and energy fluxes at wetland area, using eddy covariance method has been working in Rzecin (western part of Poland). This measurement station is the only one in Poland with unique sensors set where the eddy covariance technique is applied. This site is included into the European measuring network CARBOEUROPE operating within the VI European Frame Program (IP).

The fundamental aim of GREENFLUX project is to achieve the recent knowledge and skills concerning tools and techniques for the estimation of greenhouse gases exchange between various ecosystems and the atmosphere. The specific goals are as follows: extension of measurement possibilities of Rzecin station, data base construction and management as well as work out a concept of a new regional measuring network of greenhouse gases in Poland. In Rzecin measuring station there are carried out measurements of CO2, H2O and occasionally CH4, fluxes between the atmosphere and wetland surface. Measurements are carried out using the eddy covariance method.

For the entire description of carbon exchange between the wetland surface and the atmosphere, permanent methane and others greenhouse gases exchange measurements are indispensable. Application of new measuring techniques (chamber and the REA) will allow us to achieve this goal. Construction of an appropriate database in modern standard is a very important task because calculating algorithms which are used for estimating of greenhouse gases fluxes are constantly in progress and the modern databases should be flexible to apply different calculating software.
