Objective
String theory is currently the best candidate for a fundamental description unifying all forces of nature. It has given rise to many new concepts which are now applied in various fields of cutting-edge physics and mathematics. This research proposal aims at improving the understanding of the principles underlying string theory by extending one of its dualities, the c-map.
This generalization requires the use of concepts and computational techniques which have been developed only recently. The extended c-map will lead to new insights in theoretical physics and mathematics. In string theory it will provide a new window for studying properties of string compactifications with spontaneously broken supersymmetry, the best candidates for connecting string theory to experimental physics. In mathematics it will be a novel tool for constructing quaternion-Ker metrics and studying the moduli space of manifolds with SU(3)-structure. Hence the research topic is clearly of interdisciplinary nature.
The applicant received his Ph.D. in the research group of Dr. T. Mohaupt at the University of Jena and held a prestigious Ph.D. scholarship of the German National Academic Foundation. He has an outstanding record of scientific achievements and his skills are excellently suited for carrying out this challenging research project. The project will be hosted at the Spinoza Institute of the Utrecht University. Working in close collaboration with the scientist in charge Prof. Dr. B. de Wit in this internationally renowned research group will be tremendously beneficial for the applicant.
The scientific and complementary skills acquired in carrying out this project will offer the applicant excellent prospects for furthering his career as an innovative researcher who will strengthen the academic environment of the European Union.
