Design and Application of a Travel Survey for European Long-distance Trips Based on an International Network of Expertise

Objective

This proposal is addressed to develop and implement an European Survey of long-distance mobility. Based on the existing knowledge a total survey design will be developed.

This design will treat the respondents as customers and this one-to-one approach has been proved to be successful in motivating the citizens to participate. Combined with approved methods for data validation a high-quality database can be provided. A network with national institutions (ministries, statistical offices), which are responsible for travels surveys will be built up. They will be provided with the survey methodology and be trained to implement it. So a unique compatible survey method can be applied by national partners all over Europe and be repeated by a responsible institution (e. g. EUROSTAT).

The results of this survey will be presented as mobility indicators describing long-distance mobility, as O-D matrices and as a database for researchers for further analysing.
