Prediction and monitoring of subsidence hazards above coal mines

Objective

Mining Subsidence Engineering is one of the most important topics in relation with coal mining. Although its occurrence, prediction and control are well known, this project will apply various innovative techniques to an old problem.

These new techniques can been subdivided considering if they will be applied to the evaluation of long term stability of roadways, long-walls or shafts (Laser Scanner survey and other geophysical non destructive techniques) for subsidence prediction; or if its application is to the subsidence control at surface (digital photo-grammetry, INSAR, seismicity).

In this field all these monitoring techniques will be linked, by GPS, to a GIS so a good land management, minimizing subsidence hazards, above existing coal mined areas will be achieved. As a consequence of this project a better protection of the environment in coal areas and an improvement of the competitive position of European coal can be assured.
