Portable Workstation for Education in Europe

Objective

The objective of the POWER project is to develop a portable workstation, targeted on the education market, capable of operating in stand-alone mode or on a network and able to support multiple input devices including a speech interface.

The project builds on existing microprocessor technology with the Advanced Risc Machine (ARM) chip, but envisages both further development of this chip and the exploitation of any results emerging from the Open Microprocessor systems Initiative (OMI) regarding its successors.

Areas of development will include:

- development of network support through wireless networking
- support for multiple input devices
- a speech interface for both data input and output
- support for multiple operating systems.

The consortium plans to enhance market acceptability through close monitoring of user requirements via structured user trials and evaluations together with additional market research in the early phases.
