Project description
Advanced substrates to revolutionise bio-based industries
Microbiology plays a vital role in bio-based industries and research, offering critical insights and advancements across multiple sectors. Many industries rely on cultivating microbes, yet growing complex microbial communities outside their natural habitat remains a significant challenge. This difficulty, particularly in human mucus layers, hampers microbiology-based technologies. Developers of microbiome-modulating drugs and microbiome researchers require a platform that supports microbial growth under biologically relevant conditions. The EIC-funded Bac3Gel project aims to create innovative in-vitro mucus models that enable the cultivation of complex communities. By integrating a three-dimensional structure with nutrient gradients, physical properties, and oxygen distribution, the project will develop a ready-to-use platform for developing microbiota-based therapies. This breakthrough will advance microbiome research and unlock new therapeutic possibilities.
Objective
Bac3Gel is a biotech company that develops and distributes advanced substrates to harness the full power of microorganisms.
Bac3Gel substrates are the first that combine three-dimensionality with gradients of oxygen, nutrients and physical properties to allow the growth of complex microbial communities and currently unculturable bacteria that depend on these microenvironments to thrive. Our advanced substrates have the power to revolutionise the status quo of microbiology and unlock innovative bacteria-based solutions to solve challenges across multiple bio-based industries. Bac3Gel mission is to ultimately foster the discovery of new antibiotics and bio-based solutions to feed the ever-growing demand for innovative treatments, as well as the development of microbiome-modulating drugs to address 90% of diseases linked to human microbiome imbalance.
