A new neuroimaging modality: from bench to bedside

Final Report Summary - FUSIMAGINE (A new neuroimaging modality: from bench to bedside)

In the last decade, ultrasound imaging has gained new capabilities and produced new insights in the field of neuroscience. The development of new concepts, such as ultrafast ultrasound, has enhanced Doppler sensitivity by orders of magnitude and has paved the way for ultrasonic functional neuroimaging. Thanks to ERC grant FUSIMAGINE, we developed and positioned functional ultrasound (fUS imaging) as a unique and new modality in the field of neuroimaging filling a gap between cellular level and whol brain imaging.
We made the first proof of concepts of fUS imaging in awake and freely moving animals, during sleep, during complex cognitive tasks. We also gave the first proofs of concept of functional ultrasound imaging during peroperative imaging in humans and non invasive transfontanellar imaging in human neonates. Finally we demonstrated full 4D fUS imaging in rodents and paved the way to a wide dissemination of ultrasonic neuroimaging with the creation of Iconeus startup company within the framework of the project.
