A boost for agronomic research in Algeria

EU funding has helped to reinforce the cooperation and research capacities of the National Agronomic Research Institute of Algeria (INRAA). The Institute is now better prepared to participate in European and regional collaborative research initiatives related to food, agriculture and water.

The project FAWIRA (Strengthening of food, agriculture and water related international research cooperation of Algeria) was established to reinforce, in the targeted areas, cooperation and exchange among stakeholders, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and academic institutes at a transnational level. An analysis of the needs and opportunities in research and innovations related to food, agriculture and water in Algeria resulted in greater visibility for researchers. It also helped formulate a process for international projects targeting the nation's socioeconomic needs. Work in this area also led to the creation of a database related to research and innovation needs, as well as priorities for building Euro-Algerian projects. Another action involved identifying commercial opportunities for future development through activities devoted to food, agriculture and water. The project strengthened linkages and networks including research institutions, public institutions and SMEs (triple helix model) at national and regional levels. FAWIRA applied a cluster approach centred on regions and territories. For example, an olive oil cluster was established in the Bouira region, bringing together researchers from INRAA, local institutions and a specialised cooperative. Other project activities involved institutional changes and the creation of an economic valorisation department of research results. Additionally, INRAA open days have been established in support of dialogue among the triple helix actors and for opportunities to update the database related to agricultural research needs and priorities in Algeria. Capacity building and research training conducted within the project framework has positively impacted national research and development efforts in support of priority issues related to Algeria's food security. FAWIRA also laid the basis for developing and submitting Horizon 2020 research project proposals. The targeted focus areas include sustainable development, promoting innovation, and developing entrepreneurship and creating jobs in related sectors. Project partners also worked to disseminate project results and support networking with European and international initiatives to promote INRAA activities internationally. FAWIRA has facilitated greater integration of Algerian researchers and INRAA in the European Research Area (ERA). It has also contributed to the development and consolidation of EU-Algerian scientific partnerships.
