Development of a novel and integrated portable non destructive analysis system for the documentation of artworks.

Obiettivo

The scope of the project is the development of an integrated non-destructive portable analysis-diagnosis system (called InfrArtSonic) for the 3D sampling and reconstruction of painted artworks. The system will be of a unique and invaluable aid for art hist orians and restorers in the frame of documentation of cultural object in the Mediterranean area. The system will unify different modalities such as 3D ultrasound microscopy, VIS-nIR-mIR spectroscopy and digital imaging. Using data fusion methods the system will be able to display the depth profile of the paint layers of an artwork as well as the local distribution of the pigments in each of these paint layers. In brief: 1.The InfrArtSonic system will constitute a powerful non-destructive documentation tool for artworks. The system will provide with: 2. The overview of the stratigraphy without sampling. 3. Possible previous overpaintings as well as the reveal of previous restoration attempts. 4. The authenticity of the artwork. 5. The painting technique and m aterials used. The methods that will be used and optimized taking into consideration several special aspects of the present proposal for the acquisition of the needed and relevant information are 1. Acoustic microscopy. 2. VIS-nIR-mIR Spectroscopy and nIR-mIR imaging. Special methods will be developed in order to fuse all the available information and thus maximize the benefit obtained by the information that is provided from each of these methods. As soon as a definite and exact result is derived from the fusion of the data, a 3D model will be used in order to display the results in a user friendly visual way. Using acoustic microscopy the depth profile of the paint layers? is definitely possible. Using VIS-nIR-mIR spectroscopy the local distribution of th e materials (pigments) will be identified. Using the complementary information provided by these methods, the local stratigraphy of the artwork will be obtained.
