European satellite rainfall analysis and monitoring at the geostationary scale (EURAINSAT)

Obiettivo

We address the issues under "1.1.4.-7.2. The development of generic Earth observation technologies", namely "Introduce scientific results into new or existing applications". Results are expected to be of very high relevance also for1.1.4.-1.5.2. and 1.1.4.-7.1.. A real-time method for cloud characterisation within a rapid cycle of rainfall estimation is proposed, exploiting multi spectral data from the new METEOSAT Second Generation SEVIRI radiometer and microwave data from SSM/I and TRMM. Operational use over large areas and data assimilation intones models for now casting and hydrology is envisaged, e.g. flood monitoring/prediction and hydro geological disaster management. Prototype systems are available and more research is needed for a better understanding of cloud and mesoscale processes leading to intense precipitation. A wide interest exists from relevant institutions world-wide.
1) Data sets of satellite measurements from different radiometers in the visible, infrared, near infrared and microwave spectral range;
2) A common data set of case studies representative of different precipitation regimes and areas of interest;
3) A data set of aircraft cloud measurements over the Mediterranean;
4) Results from cross validation of satellite rainfall estimation algorithms over selected case studies;
5) Documentation of data sets and algorithms;
6) Cloud property retrieval algorithm using multispectral satellite data with LUTs of cloud properties;
8) Identification of precipitation formation processes using MSG, TRMM-VIRS and MODIS data;
9) A library of cloud composition vertical profiles from the Hebrew Univ. detailed cloud microphysical model;
10) Intercomparison results of passive MW algorithms;
11) Prototype algorithm for rapid update rainfall estimation;
12) Protoptype software for assimilation of rainfall data into NWP limited area models (LAM);
13) Prototype of software for the computation of turbulent fluxes in the PBL and tests using in situ observations in selected sites;
14) Upgrade of the LAM RAMS with satellite convective rain assimilation;
15) Assimilation of the rapid update cycle of rainfall estimation into the Tuscany Region meteorological service forecasting chain;
16) Advanced study onthe integration of lightning data within multisensor nowcasting techniques;
17) Development of an attenuation MW/IR retrieval algorithm along satellite telecommunication paths.
