The European Commission, DG XIV, has published a prior information notice concerning an invitation to tender for a feasibility study on the use of SAR imagery in detecting fishing activities in the north-west Atlantic area (NAFO). The aim of the project is to demonstrate the use of SAR imagery for validating fishing vessel position reports obtained through the VMS and for identifying vessels which do not have on-board satellite tracking devices. The project will comprise all the various stages: data acquisition, processing, distribution, adding value, and the dissemination of added value information to fisheries managers and operational inspection units. The invitation to tender should be published in July 1998.
