The most recent European Better Environment Awards for Industry were presented on 8 June 1998, in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands. These awards, an initiative of the European Commission and supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), are presented every two years for improvements in the environmental performance of various industries. Five categories of awards were presented to the following winners: - The British NatWest Group was the winner in the managing for sustainable development category for their Environmental Management System and other initiatives; - In the partnership for sustainable development category, the German natural gas company, Ruhrgas were awarded the prize for support to their Russian partner Gazprom to enable them to transport gas from Russia to Europe more efficiently; - The Danish company ACCUSTRIP, received the first prize in the cleaner technologies category with the Accu Graphic-In-Line cleaning system; - The winner in the Eco-design category was the Finnish company Sarlin-Hydor Oy, for improving compressed air systems; - The award in the recovery of waste category went to a family business, Jesse Brough Metals Group, for the complete recycling of its black and white slag.
