The European Science Foundation (ESF) has issued a call for proposals for a number of exploratory workshops in the field of life and environmental sciences. This aims to identify the most promising new research opportunities which are likely to benefit from a coordinated European research effort. Each workshop will allow up to 20 European scientists to develop the case for increased interaction at European level. It is expected that these workshops will then lead to proposals for sponsored networks or programmes, which can be recommended for ESF support for periods of up to five years. The subject areas to be covered by the workshops are expected to include functional genomics, long-term dynamics of terrestrial ecosystems and other fields in life and environmental sciences.
