European Science Foundation - 1997 Annual Report
The European Science Foundation (ESF) has recently published its annual report for 1997, a year marked by the arrival of a new Secretary-General, with Mr. Eric Banda taking over responsibility for the ESF's management from Mr. Peter Fricker. One of the ESF's main achievements during 1997 was the preparation of an action plan for the years 1998 to 2001. This action plan aims to clarify the ESF's complementary role for the improvement of the health and excellence of science, in relation to other European bodies. The ESF has also tackled issues such as the improvement of its instruments for networking on science and science policy and agreed an agenda of specific issues to be addressed. The report highlights some of the work supported during 1997, aiming to give a flavour of the breadth of the ESF's activities and their significance for Europe as a whole.
