Monitoring urban dynamics
The monitoring urban dynamics (MURBANDY) project, initiated by the Centre for Earth Observation (CEO) programme of the European Commission, aims to contribute to the understanding and analysis of the past, present and future trends of the European landscape and territory in relation to regional development policies. In particular, MURBANDY aims at measuring the urban structures of European cities and the changes in land use that have occurred during the past 40 years, both in the urban and surrounding rural landscapes. In addition the study will evaluate the impact of urban areas on the environment and produce scenarios for the future development of urban regions in a sustainable Europe. Currently the study is in the data acquisition phase, based on a sample of cities selected in Europe. This call refers to the provision of expert services and urban growth modelling based on cellular automata techniques to produce "reference" and "historical" land-use databases for urban and peri-urban areas (the area around cities made up of small settlements and rural areas).
