The MARTRANS project, a European Commission Information Society project, is developing different information and communications technologies (ICT) aimed at enhancing the organisation and use of intermodal freight transport, and at improving supply chain management. The development of seamless tracing and tracking of intermodal cargoes has been identified as having the potential to enable better inventory-in-motion management. As a consequence, the European Commission (DG VII and DG XIII) has decided to launch a study with a view to developing and demonstrating open and interoperable cost-effective intermodal tracking solutions.
