LIFE-Environment: 116 new projects approved
A total of 116 projects are to receive funding under the environment sector of the Community's Financial Instrument for the Environment (LIFE) following the 1998 selection round. The total contribution for these projects from the EU is ECU 48.6 million, with the full cost for all the projects being ECU 173.9 million. Each of the projects selected represents one of the three priority area for LIFE-Environment actions covering innovative and demonstration actions for industry (51 projects), demonstration, promotion and technical assistance actions for local authorities (60 projects) and preparatory actions to support EU legislation and policies (5 projects). The industrial projects are dominated by waste and water issues, whereas most of the local authority projects deal with planning, waste and water treatment. Of the 116 projects, 41 focus on waste treatment and recycling, 26 on water issues, 18 on land use planning, 9 on air related matters, 9 on clean technologies, 4 on soil questions, 2 on coastal zone management, 2 on noise problems, and 5 on other actions.
