The European Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods (ECVAM), which forms part of the Joint Research Centre's Environment Institute, has published an invitation to tender for the development of alternative methods in biosciences, with the ultimate aim of reducing, refining, or replacing the use of laboratory animals. One of ECVAM's current priorities is the prevalidation and validation of non-animal methods for predicting skin irritation and the penetration of chemical through the blood-brain barrier. Two studies are therefore required on: - The prevalidation of in-vitro tests for skin irritation; - The prevalidation of in-vitro models for the blood-brain barrier.
