The European Commission, DG III, has published an invitation to tender for the monitoring of the shipbuilding market in 1999 and to provide monthly, mid-term and final reports on the new building contracts concluded in this period. The information provided in the reports should include the types of ships, parties involved, contract price and the related conditions such as delivery date and financing conditions. The reports should also give an appraisal on whether European yards are affected by unfair practice from competitors outside the EEA for the period under consideration. These could involve applying unfair pricing or receiving countervailing subsidies. The study should cover ships over 5,000 gt and will focus mainly on Korea, Japan, China and Singapore, for which an information-gathering network may need to be developed.
