EUPHRESCO - Deepening the Roots of Plant Health Research Collaboration
Over the last century, the rate of introduction and establishment of new, economically or environmentally damaging plant pests, diseases and invasive species has increased steadily as a result of the expansion in global trade of plant material. Climate change and EU expansion will further increase these threats. While plant health policy is mainly determined at EU level, to date there has been little co-ordination of the research on which these policies are built or implemented. The EU-funded EUPHRESCO (European Phytosanitary Research Co-ordination) Project will address this issue by ambitiously bringing together research funders from across Europe who are concerned with quarantine plant pests, diseases and invasive species. EUPHRESCO will enable national research programmes to share information and better use funds. EUPHRESCO will develop common research agendas based on shared priorities and will launch joint research activities at the end of the Project through a durable network of national research funders, as well as calls for pilot research projects in spring 2008.
