A report summarising the current state-of-play of the European Land-Ocean Interaction Studies (ELOISE) thematic network has recently been published. ELOISE is an initiative funded under the Environment and Climate, Marine Science and Technology (MAST) and International Cooperation (INCO) research programmes of the European Commission, DG XII, as well as the national research programmes of the EU Member States. It aims at developing a coherent European coastal zone research network of high scientific value and is intended to contribute to other activities of the Commission in the fields of integrated coastal zone management and spatial planning. This first implementation report describes the projects undertaken within the network and the planning and execution of ELOISE since its inception in 1994. Currently ELOISE comprises 13 shared cost and 2 concerted action projects involving 115 partners in 16 European countries. Details of these projects and of cross-project working groups within the network are also given, as well as a description of the efforts made within the Commission to facilitate coordination between these projects and with similar activities underway at national and international level. The report also outlines the planning of phase II of ELOISE and beyond. A final section at the end of the report provides contact details for all the partners involved in ELOISE projects and a list of other contact points of potential interest.
