A publication containing the lectures and posters presented during an advanced study course on tropospheric chemistry and space observation held in Clermont-Ferrand, France, from 21 to 31 July 1997, has recently been issued. The course was held within the framework of the EU's Environment and Climate research programme and was organised in cooperation with several French research institutes. The aim of the course, which brought together 52 students from 11 countries, was to provide young researchers with the opportunity to hear from those scientists involved in European research projects in the fields of tropospheric chemistry and space observation. The topics presented during the course corresponded to some of those dealt with under the Environment and Climate research programme and included: - Chemical processes in the troposphere; - Radiative transfer; - Microphysical processes: nucleation, aerosols, interactions between gas particles; - Dynamic processes in the troposphere; - Exchange processes, troposphere and effective sources; - Impact of air emissions on the troposphere; - Biogenic and anthropogenic emissions in the boundary layer.
