Reducing design conservatism in pressure equipment
In the framework of the implementation of the recently adopted Pressure Equipment Directive (97/23/EC), the European Commission is seeking an organisation to conduct a study on a knowledge-based system to reduce design conservatism in pressure equipment. European pressure component manufacturers must address the challenge of using high-strength steels for thickness reduction in both plane and welded sections. If not, competitive advantages linked to the Pressure Equipment Directive will be lost. In parallel to development of new techniques, work is progressing on the elaboration of new European standards. Such harmonised standards will be the means of complying with the essential safety requirements of the Directive. The study should be completed within 24 months.
