Ireland targets extra €200 million from FP7

The increased target will see Ireland working to achieve €600m in EU Framework Funding over the next six years.

The Irish Government agreed on Wednesday 28th November 2007 that Ireland would target an extra €200 million in EU funding for research and technology. The increased target will see Ireland working to achieve €600m in EU Framework Funding over the next six years. In making the announcement on behalf of the Cabinet Committee, the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Mr Micheál Martin, T.D. highlighted the significant contribution that the Framework Programme had made to the internationalisation of Irish research. “The Framework programme has enabled academic and industry research groups to work with peers across Europe and derive the benefits associated with collaborative research. Between now and 2013 we must build on the progress which has been made.” “Ireland has a reputation as a location for cutting edge research and this is bringing jobs into our communities. Already under phase six of the Framework Funding (FP6) Irish researchers have worked side by side with colleagues across Europe on more than 500 projects. Now it is time to build on that and our new funding target reflects our commitment to continue having a lead research role within the EU and at a Global level.” Minister Martin explained that the Cabinet Committee considered the revised target of €600 million to be challenging, yet attainable. It also takes into account the potential for Irish participation in different parts of the programme. He added that a revised support structure had been put in place to encourage researchers and enterprises, where appropriate, to avail of the opportunities within the programme. The Minister concluded by stating that the decision reflects the Government’s objective to ensure that Ireland continues to maintain its competitiveness by developing our position as a dynamic knowledge driven economy. Under the SSTI and the National Development Plan, a total investment of €8.2 billion will be made over the period 2007 to 2013.
