Partnership Opportunities with South Africa under FP7

The European South African Science and Technology Advancement Programme (ESASTAP) stands ready to offer any assistance, which may be required by European researchers wishing to cooperate with South Africa under the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7.)

In many of the FP7 calls currently open, cooperation with South Africa is specifically required, encouraged or mentioned in the applicable Work Programmes. These opportunities include: FP7-Energy-2008-1 (Energy) ENERGY.2008.5.2.1: CO2 Capture and Storage – Capacity building with the large emerging economies (South Africa is a member of the Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum) FP7-KBBE-2008-2B (Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, and Biotechnology) KBBE-2008-3-1-02: Sweet Sorghum – An alternative energy crop for biofuel production in semiarid and temperate regions KBBE-2008-3-2-05: Life cycle analysis and socioeconomic assessment of integrated biorefineries KBBE-2008-3-1-04: Plant-produced vaccines FP7-NMP-2008-SMALL-2 (Nanosciences, Nanotechnologies, Materials and new Production Technologies) NMP-2008-1.3-2: Impact of engineered nanoparticles on health and the environment FP7-NMP-2008-LARGE-2 (Nanosciences, Nanotechnologies, Materials and new Production Technologies) NMP-2008-4.0-2: Catalysts and sustainable processes to produce liquid fuels from coal and natural gas FP7-AAT-2008-RTD-1 (Aeronautics and Air Transport) The Work Programme mentions that topic areas for increased co-operation identified include, in addition to environmental and safety-related topics: application of advanced materials manufacturing (e.g. of metals, thermoplastics and composites); advanced electronics (e.g. MEMS, health/usage monitoring, guidance and control); and software development (e.g. flight control, simulators, computational mechanics, CFDs). FP7-SST-2008-RTD-1 (Sustainable Surface Transport) SST.2008.3.1.7: Large event mobility management (especially in big cities) SST.2008.4.1.4: Road safety of vulnerable road users in emerging economies FP7-TPT-2008-RTD-1 (Transport) TPT.2008.15: Cross-fertilisation of alternative fuels research across all transport modes (specifically with regard to synthetic fuels research) FP7-PEOPLE-IRSES-2008 (International Research Staff Exchange Scheme) South Africa is one of the targeted countries for this new mobility instrument launched under the “People” programme of FP7. It is important to emphasise that dedicated national matching funding is available to support the mobility costs of participating South African organisations in approved IRSES proposals. Other topics where African / developing countries’ participation such as South Africa are especially invited also include: FP7-ENV-2008-1 (Environment including Climate Change) ENV.2008.2.1.3.1: Assessment of methods to combat desertification FP7-KBBE-2008-2B (Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, and Biotechnology) KBBE-2008-1-2-05: Improved agro-forestry systems for sustainable farming All European researchers interested in working with South African partners in these fields are encouraged to contact the ESASTAP at contact@esastap.org.za. ESASTAP will gladly render any assistance they may require, such as bringing them into contact with appropriate South African partners. It should also be mentioned that dedicated funding is available, through South Africa’s FP7 seed funding instrument, for both European and South African partners, to for example support travel costs to and from South Africa, during FP7 proposal preparation. See: http://www.esastap.org.za/esastap/eufp/assist.php(opens in new window). Of course ESASTAP will gladly also render any other assistance which European organisations may require with regard to cooperation with South Africa in all other areas of the FP7 where cooperation with South Africa, as an International Cooperation Partner Country (ICPC), is wished for. ESASTAP is a dedicated platform to promote scientific and technological cooperation between South Africa and the EU, implemented by the South African Department of Science and Technology with the support of the European Commission's Directorate-General Research.
