A first round of 42 projects are to receive Community financial support in the context of the financial instrument for the environment (LIFE) established by Council Regulation (EEC) No 1973/92 of 21 May 1992. The instrument provides for the granting of support for demonstration and technical assistance projects in the field of protection of the environment, and disposes of an appropriation of ECU 66.5 million for Community co-financing during 1992. The initial group of projects will cost a total of ECU 89.8 million, of which ECU 27.6 million is to be provided by the Community. They cover the following areas: - Promotion of sustainable development and the quality of the environment; - protection of habitats and of nature; - education, training and information; - projects outside Community territory. Under the LIFE Regulation, proposals for actions to be financed may be submitted to the Commission by the Member States or by the relevant national authorities of third countries. Alternatively, the Commission may ask any legal or natural persons established in the Community to submit applications for assistance in respect of measures of particular interest by means of a notice published in the Official Journal of the European Communities.
