New mobile solutions to improve your workforce performance

This document provides a technical and functional description of new type of mobile solutions which integrates in the platform developed in the project Wise-Up.

Wise-Up project as acronym of “WIRELESS SOLUTIONS TO IMPROVE YOUR WORKFORCE PERFORMANCE” is an eTEN project. Wise-Up belongs to the Field Force Automation (FFA) Mobile solutions which include all the applications that enable the execution of activities geographically dislocated on the field and carried out by technical personnel. In this context WiseUp will provide the functional an usability assessment of a new set of mobile services everyday more important as new mobile devices and technologies enter the forthcoming future market. The Wise-Up project is testing and validating on different European markets innovative services for ‘mobile workers’ which provide bidirectional access from mobile terminals to technical data such as datasheets, technical reports and digital maps. The tests services location is the telecommunications maintenance environment, where maintenance engineers are working at customers sites and need real-time access to technical information and the location of technical equipment in the field. The validation is being carried out by taking into account the motivation of the testing partners and the business that shall be realistically developed and deployed by them: two main validation cycles are answering to all the team about the opportunities to save money and/or start a new set of services. The services that are going to be validate are: 1) access to the communication platform; 2) customisation of the client interface following the user needs, mainly of data input and visualisation; 3) customisation of the platform and/or the client for the access to company database or ERP systems; 4) put at disposal of already settled mobile devices. Provision could be by leasing, useful if the TELCO does not have dedicated mobile devices to speed the installation process; 5) provision of high-qualified maintenance technician to TELCO’ needs: in other terms, the provider offers an high-quality/low-cost service to TELCO that will test the functioning and/or the performance of any owned facilities by spending less money and saving the operational time. Wise-Up will follow the most important technological trends in the FFA ambit thanks its natural adaptability to any mobile device. The future broadband for mobile networks (UMTS, HDSPA) will enable the communication of “heavy content” also through mobile/smart phones: we may think about high definition images, videos, really useful for other field of maintenance and diagnosis applications. Also usability is a key point: the technical team is developing an unique interface to let the services available to a wide European costumer audience and reduce front-end setup timing.
