A publication providing a complete set of guidelines on how to implement a quality control system in a microbiological laboratory has recently been published. The book was prepared with the assistance of leading microbiology specialists in Europe and was supported financially by the EU's Standards, Measurement and Testing (SMT) programme. The working group involved in the preparation of the publication included food and water microbiologists from various testing laboratories, universities and industry, statisticians, as well as quality assurance and control specialists in chemistry. With so many different quality control procedures, their introduction in a laboratory is often difficult. The book therefore aims to provide some guidance to microbiology laboratory staff on this process and provides information on the tools available, which have all been developed and applied by the authors in their own laboratories. The reference materials and interlaboratory studies dealt with in the publication have been largely taken from projects conducted within the SMT programme.
