A Council Decision of 5 October 1992 on the conclusion of the International Agreement on jute and jute products 1989 (92/489/EEC) establishes that the Community and its Member States shall notify the Secretary-General of the United Nations of their approval, as importers, of the Agreement. The 1989 Agreement entered into force provisionally following a decision by the United Nations conference on 12 April 1991. Objectives of the Agreement relate to both exporting and importing members of the International Jute Organization (IJO). Inter alia, provision is made for the International Jute Council to identify, arrange for the implementation of, and monitor certain RTD projects in this field.
